Volunteers Remove More Than 160 lbs. of Trash From India Point Park

On Sunday, October 3, 2021, fifty volunteers of the International WeLoveU Foundation joined together for a first-time collaboration with the City of Providence Parks Department to clean up India Point Park in Providence, RI.

The cleanup is part of the Oceans and Waterways Cleanups campaign, which aims to eliminate the number of plastics polluting the ocean and endangering marine and human life. India Point Park is where the Providence and Seekonk rivers meet and is frequently full of debris, plastics, and microplastics that pile up along the borders.

Ready! Set! Clean!

Without hesitation, the WeLoveU volunteers got to work. Joyfully cleaning along the rocky and steep border, they collected plastics such as bottles, cups, bags, and cutlery. As the volunteers cleaned, many locals passed by sharing their gratitude, saying, “Thank you!” and “We appreciate what you’re doing!”

In the end, over 20 bags of plastics and debris were collected, totaling more than 160 pounds. The volunteers expressed their passion for supporting the long but important fight against plastic pollution. “Plastic pollution is a silent problem,” said Haley Scoggins, a volunteer of the International WeLoveU Foundation. “I’m excited to be doing this work and to be making an impact in the community.”

The Oceans and Waterways campaign has touched down in MassachusettsNew Jersey, and New York. Volunteers from Rhode Island, also known as “The Ocean State,” are excited to have this cleanup added to the list. Collectively, participants are making an effort to improve the environment. The WeLoveU Foundation and its volunteers will continue to shed light on the issues impacting the global village.

  3. Awesome event! I’m happy to have been able to participate in WeLoveU’s 1st cleanup in Rhode Island. This area was pretty dirty, but it felt great to know we were out there making an impact and raising awareness of plastic pollution in the community. I can’t wait for the next event in the ocean state : )

  4. These types of cleanups are desperately needed nowadays. I am glad to see WeLoveU setting a great example by cleaning up the community.
