On Sunday, August 15, 2021, the International WeLoveU Foundation, design firm HDR, and the City of Newark joined forces to clean Riverfront Park. More than 50 WeLoveU volunteers and 20 HDR volunteers came together to remove the plastic waste that surrounds Newark, NJ’s Passaic River shoreline. In total, the volunteers filled 80 garbage bags and picked up oversized items like tires and pieces of plastic debris.
The cleanup is the first of WeLoveU’s Oceans and Waterways Cleanups Campaign. The environmental movement WeLoveU launched this summer aims to reduce plastic pollution by mobilizing volunteers to clean local waterways and coastal sites. Notably, Riverfront Park is a beautiful landmark in the City of Newark. Unfortunately, the surrounding bodies of water are known to be filled with contaminants.
“HDR is pleased to partner with the WeLoveU Foundation and the City of Newark for this Passaic Riverfront cleanup,” expressed HDR’s Senior GIS Manager Frank Brilhante. “Having supported the City’s water quality improvement efforts for over 20 years, we see this initiative as a visible extension of that effort bringing clean, healthy, and open spaces to residents of the City of Newark.”
Many HDR employees work in Newark’s downtown area. They were happy to clean a park close to their working quarters for a good cause. Together, they saw the power of unity and the results that occur when working together. WeLoveU hopes this is the beginning of a cleaner, more plastic-free environment around Newark for years to come. Also, WeLoveU looks forward to working with HDR and the City of Newark in the future.
