250 Volunteers Clear Over 5,000 Pounds of Trash in Howard Beach

On August 29, 2021, the International WeLoveU Foundation joined forces with the American Littoral Society and NYC Parks and Recreation to clean Howard Beach in Queens, New York. Two hundred and fifty volunteers from eight chapters around New York collected 223 bags of trash weighing 5,263 pounds. This event fulfills the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals 13 (Climate Action) and 14 (Life Below Water.)

Assemblywoman Pheffer Amato Joins WeLoveU to Clean Howard Beach

Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato, a representative of the 23rd district of the New York Assembly, showed her support to the WeLoveU volunteers. “It’s the first time I’m working with the WeLoveU Foundation, and I’m very impressed by the number of blue shirts that I’m seeing and the number of people that came out cleaning in my area,” stated the Assemblywoman.

“Though we have a lot of community groups that have pitched in, I see how organized you are, there are many people, and you’re not cleaning a little patch. You’re extending out a mile. I think that is fantastic.” She concluded with, “I felt love immediately as I walked in here today. I’m very grateful for the volunteers and the organizers and everyone who’s come out today.”

In addition, Neil Giannelli, Senator Joseph P. Addabbo’s Chief of Staff, also came to support the volunteers. He presented a citation on behalf of the senator. “This is a small expression of our appreciation for the work that the WeLoveU Foundation is doing here on the beach,” Mr. Giannelli said.

Working unitedly, the volunteers have made a meaningful impact in the Bay. Michelle Francis, a WeLoveU volunteer, expressed, “What we’re doing here today is very important. A lot can be accomplished through unity and at a quicker rate. If everyone has the mindset to come together, it can make a difference. This is why I’m here today, to contribute and give back to society. I’m thankful to be here. It’s been delightful.”

The Spark That Started It All

During the global pandemic, recycling centers were either closed or accepting less plastic, causing an increase in single-use materials. As a result, the ecosystems are infested with waste and pollution. Due to this worldwide dilemma, WeLoveU initiated the 2021 Clean WORLD Movement in the U.S. and the Oceans and Waterways campaign. The former removes litter from parks and streets, and the latter removes litter that can enter coastal sites. The foundation aims to create a safer environment for inhabitants near Howard Beach through this voluntary work.

The WeLoveU Foundation will continue this movement to ameliorate the environment and raise awareness on plastic reduction.
