The Intl. WeLoveU Foundation Donates 350 Backpacks to a NJ Elementary School to Bridge the School Supply Gap

On September 9, 2021, the International WeLoveU Foundation delivered 350 backpacks to the Dr. Charles C. Polk Elementary School in Roselle, NJ. New Jersey Congressman Donald Payne, Jr., Board of Education President Dr. Courtney Washington, Superintendent Dr. Nathan Fisher, Principal Ms. Andreea Harry, school administrators, and teachers joined the donation ceremony.

The donation was part of WeLoveU’s Closing the Homework Gap: Packs on Backs project to help bridge the school supply gap by providing backpacks to students in need. In August, WeLoveU donated 600 backpacks and supplies to students in Chicago, IL, and Los Angeles, CA.

Approximately 100 third and fourth-grade students joined the event in the school gymnasium. WeLoveU representatives and honorary guests spoke to the students about the importance of education. They encouraged those who are still learning in a challenging environment amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Following the speaker’s remarks, WeLoveU volunteers distributed the backpacks to the students. Their bright faces were beaming with excitement. The students were encouraged to know that community organizations like WeLoveU are behind them and support their education.

“The homework gap has many layers, and because it is constantly evolving, closing it requires our attention,” said John Casas, WeLoveU’s vice president of community engagement. “Last year, WeLoveU helped close the homework gap and bridge the digital divide by donating devices to school districts. Now, students are returning to school and are in need of backpacks and school supplies. If this is another way we can help close the homework gap for our students and families, WeLoveU is onboard.”

The event concluded with a group photo. Students shouted “we love you!” loudly to the volunteers, their teachers, and district and community supporters. The WeLoveU Foundation will partner with schools and support students’ education for a bright and hopeful future.
