150 Marlton School Students in Los Angeles Receive Backpacks From the WeLoveU Foundation

On August 27, 2021, the International WeLoveU Foundation visited the Marlton School in Los Angeles, CA, for a backpack delivery. The special visit is part of WeLoveU’s nationwide drive, Packs on Backs, to provide students with backpacks as they return to school. The campaign aims to help bridge the supply gap and prepare students for a successful classroom experience.

“Thank you so much for coming out and providing these backpacks for our students,” said Marlton School Principal Kimberly Miller. When asked what this donation means to the students, she shared her thoughts.

“From what we have already seen, the smiles on the faces of our students, that’s it. Truly, the fact that these kids are overlooked many times; they come from low-income families. These backpacks are better than what they normally get, so we’re just thankful for that, and again the whole purpose is to encourage reading. So they put their reading books and homework and everything in that, and that’s what we want. We want to encourage them in their reading, their math, being well-rounded citizens. We thank you for that.”

The Marlton School Is One of a Kind

The Marlton School is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District and is the only school district for the deaf and hard-of-hearing in California. Established in 1968, the school teaches kindergarten through twelfth grade.

“Our school really comes from an underserved community,” expressed Lauren Maucere, Assistant Principal of the Marlton School. “Many of the children don’t get a lot of opportunities to be recognized as part of the community. So, thanks to WeLoveU and WSS for showing our children that they are a big part of the world and that they matter.”

A team of WeLoveU volunteers from the greater Los Angeles area prepared the backpack donation. The teachers from each classroom led the students safely to the playground where the WeLoveU volunteers were waiting. In total, 150 students received a backpack of their choice that WSS, a WeLoveU supporter, donated.

After receiving a backpack, the WeLoveU volunteers and students took photos together. Also, students taught volunteers how to sign, “you’re awesome!” and phrases of love and hope like “we love you!” Overall, the WeLoveU Foundation is thankful for all volunteers and supporters who made the Packs on Backs donation possible at the Marlton School. While helping students, WeLoveU is simultaneously fulfilling Sustainable Development Goal #4, Quality Education.
