WeLoveU Brings Winter Warmth to Lafayette Street School With Coat Donation

The International WeLoveU Foundation and Allan Chemical Corporation brought WeLo’s Winter Weather Clothing Drive to Lafayette Street School in Newark, NJ. This event took place on Monday, December 18, 2023.

Wearing their blue shirts, the volunteers spread warmth and cheer to the pre-kindergarten students at Lafayette Street School. Their thoughtful donations included 25 winter coats and essential accessories such as gloves, neck warmers, and socks.

Bringing Warmth to Lafayette Street School

Nestled in the heart of Newark’s Ironbound section, Lafayette Street School was named after Marquis de Lafayette for his pivotal role in the Revolutionary War and his contributions to attaining American Independence. The school is well-known for its multicultural education, serving over 1,200 students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.

Addressing the excited students, Superintendent Roger Leon highlighted the occasion’s significance. He said, “The beautiful people in those blue shirts are responsible for bringing all these gifts. …we are going to give them to you today!”

He emphasized that these gifts reached the most in-need children in Newark and those facing the greatest challenges. “The gesture is obviously warm, but it is going to families that actually really need help,” Leon added.

Hansani Council, president of the board of education, echoed this sentiment. Council noted, “For them not to have to think about being cold coming to school and to be able to focus more on their education, it is truly an honor that you guys are doing this for them today.”

Expressing eagerness to see the children in their new coats, the council thanked the WeLoveU Foundation and all the volunteers, emphasizing the Board of Education’s deep appreciation for their love, support, and partnership.

Extending the Impact Beyond Newark

The impact of WeLoveU’s Winter Weather Clothing Drive extends beyond Newark, with similar events in Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Boston. In these early days of winter, children are especially vulnerable to conditions like hypothermia and pneumonia. The economic challenges families face make this season even more burdensome.

In response to these pressing needs, WeLoveU’s coat donation initiative aims to provide children equal opportunities for a warmer winter, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals #1, No Poverty, and #3, Good Health and Well-being.

  1. This was a wonderful event! The kids, as they mentioned, were amongst those in most need. I’m so thankful to have witnessed their excitement and to see how thankful they were to receive new coats, scarves and gloves. Something we take so granted sometimes, they were so thankful for. I hope that, while they play in the snow and walk to school and do outdoor activities, they remain warm and cozy!

  2. This is so amazing to see what great of an outcome an event can have when we all just come together and lend a hand. I know all the children and families are so happy there child were able to receive a jacket. Great Job WeLoveU Volunteers and all who participated to make this event happen.

  3. This is so awesome. I’m sure those kids are so happy to receive the much needed coats. I can’t imagine having to navigate the East Coast cold without a great jacket. I’m happy to see WeLoveU is actively making a difference where it counts.
