On Tuesday, September 20, 2022, the International WeLoveU Foundation donated backpacks and school supply kits to 320 students at Randle Highlands Elementary School in Washington, D.C. The donation is part of WeLoveU’s education program, Closing the Homework Gap: Packs on Backs & Tools for Schools, which will help more than 3,300 students in nine schools across the country receive new backpacks and school supplies. The goal is to alleviate the financial burden families in under-resourced communities face during back-to-school shopping.

The District’s Need for Packs on Backs

District of Columbia Public Schools operates 117 schools across the Commonwealth. Out of 117 schools, 89 are Title 1 schools, including Randle Highlands Elementary School. That means the schools receive financial assistance to help attendees in low-income households. Principal Edwards was excited to partner with the WeLoveU Foundation as it shares the same core values to help students achieve their hopes and dreams. Returning to school after two years was a difficult shift for students. Seeing the WeLoveU volunteers deliver the essential school supplies brought great comfort to them.

“It’s very important for our school because it actually allows our scholars to have a level playing field when it comes to the supplies they need for the academic school year,” said Principal Kristie Edwards. “This was a great opportunity for our students to receive donations to start their school year off and be prepared in class as well as at home.” The volunteers near the Washington, D.C. chapter will continue partnering with other schools to close the homework gap and encourage students around the district.
