WeLoveU Volunteers Collect About One Ton of Trash in Buffalo, NY

On July 11, 2021, at 10 a.m., 50 volunteers of the International WeLoveU Foundation cleaned Broadway and Mills Street in Buffalo, New York. The volunteer service was in partnership with the Buffalo Division of Citizen Services.  Volunteers picked up abandoned car tires, couches, television sets, and other debris covering the area. In total, the WeLoveU Foundation volunteers collected around one ton or 2,000 pounds of trash. Neighborhood residents came out of their homes to express their gratitude to those helping clean up.

The cleanup is part of WeLoveU’s 2021 Clean WORLD Movement: Eliminating Waste Accumulated During COVID-19. The campaign is also supporting the United Nations declaration of the Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. Between June and July, the WeLoveU Foundation volunteers have been holding cleanups to restore various ecosystems neglected and damaged due to COVID-19.

Broadway and Mills Street: Heavy Traffic Areas

Broadway and Mills Street are densely populated streets, frequented by commuters and shoppers. Before COVID-19, the area was accumulating a lot of trash. Over time, it created an unsafe and unsanitary environment. To battle the litter, 50 WeLoveU volunteers collectively cleaned about two miles.

Director Oswaldo Mestre Jr. Cleans With WeLoveU Volunteers

From 10 a. m., Buffalo City Director of Citizen Services Oswaldo Mestre Jr. joined the cleanup. He shared encouraging remarks with the volunteers, broadcasting the cleanup live on his social media accounts.

“The International WeLoveU Foundation really plays the role: when you talk about the relationship with the United Nations, the relationships you have with the communities such as Buffalo, Syracuse, Rochester, all across the country; that’s what really makes the difference. The fact that we have volunteers come across for two, three hours just to drive here in the morning really just warms my heart.”

Buffalo PD Join the Cleanup Effort

Patina Daniels from the Buffalo City Police Department. She participated in the cleanup, helping volunteers navigate the streets safely. She expressed her thanks to the group, saying, “Thank you, thank you, thank you because this Broadway area needs all the love. So, we thank you for coming out!”

The WeLoveU volunteers will continue making strides to meet the needs of our community for a brighter and cleaner world.
