WeLoveU Donates Chromebooks and Tablets to Newark Board of Education

On Thursday, September 24, 2020, the Intl. WeLoveU Foundation donated 100 Chromebooks and tablets to Superintendent Mr. Roger León and the students of Newark Public Schools.

Donors and corporate sponsors made the delivery possible. A special spotlight is on HDR, Inc.’s Young Professional Group. The group spearheaded a fundraiser, which helped supply 30 students with Chromebooks. The WeLoveU Foundation appreciates HDR, Inc.’s proactivity in helping close the homework gap and bridge the digital divide for students in New Jersey.

The devices will allow students who attend the Roberto Clemente Elementary School in the City of Newark to participate in virtual classrooms and complete homework assignments from home. WeLoveU’s delivery will be helping close the homework gap and bridge the digital divide as the school needed precisely 100 devices. Support from donors and corporate sponsors made the delivery possible.

This effort is part of WeLoveU’s Closing the Homework Gap program that identifies schools, districts, counties, and states in need of computers and donates necessary equipment to facilitate distance learning. The Foundation recently delivered 75 Chromebooks to Irvington Public Schools the week prior and is helping school districts in Hartford, CT.

Roberto Clemente Elementary School

The delivery ceremony took place outdoors at the Roberto Clemente Elementary School. At 1 p.m., the program commenced. A limited number of parents, students, and Newark Board of Education members attended, all while wearing masks and physically distancing. Despite limited space, more than 500 viewers watched the event virtually.

In Superintendent León’s speech, he brought to the forefront of the audience’s mind the reason for their attendance: the students. The WeLoveU Foundation, along with the City of Newark, concern and aim for all students to have access to technology, ensuring they can continue their education on and offline during the pandemic. Newark Board of Education President Josephine Garcia, WeLoveU Honorable Board Member Carmela Liza and Vice President of Community Engagement John Casas also shared a few words.

For their contribution to the school, the Newark Board of Education presented the Intl. WeLoveU Foundation with a proclamation. To commemorate the delivery, group photos were taken with the participants.

The Road Ahead

WeLoveU’s Chairwoman and its volunteers hope the students will thrive through the donation of Chromebooks and tablets. The Closing the Homework Gap is also supporting school districts in Hartford, CT.
