100 Volunteers Clean Strawberry Manor in Sacramento

On Sunday, June 27, 2021, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., 100 WeLoveU volunteers cleaned Strawberry Manor in Sacramento, California. The group partnered with District 2 Councilmember Sean Loloee. This was done as part of WeLoveU’s 2021 Clean WORLD Movement in the United States: Eliminating Waste Accumulated from COVID-19.

The Need for Environmental Cleanups in America

While the air pollution decreased during COVID, there has been an increase in litter and pollution on land. There were 24 billion pieces of litter on the side of highways and 26 billion pieces of litter along waterways in 2020. Slowed litter pick-ups during the pandemic, and postponed litter abatement programs added to the rise in trash. Also, people staying home and delays in collecting trash caused residential garbage to overflow.

There’s also been a huge increase in single-use plastics and personal protective equipment such as masks and gloves – around 207 million pieces of PPE litter on the ground at any given time in 2020. Due to social distancing restrictions, many environmental clean ups were also canceled during the pandemic. The UN’s declaration of the Decade on Restoration is a 10-year journey to revive and restore our natural ecosystems throughout the world. Restoring ecosystems means stopping degradation, preventing future harm, and returning them to their natural pre-damaged state.

In honor of the United Nations declaration of the Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, WeLoveU is planning cleanups between June and July across the U.S. to restore various ecosystems that have been neglected and damaged due to COVID-19. Through the cleanups, WeLoveU is making efforts to revive and brighten communities coming out of the pandemic.

The Clean WORLD Movement in Action

For more than a decade, WeLoveU has been carrying out the Clean WORLD Movement, an environmental initiative, where volunteers clean up polluted cities, parks, mountains, rivers, and seas, while conducting environmental protection campaigns and educational seminars to foster the next generation of environmental leaders. The acronym WORLD stands for Water, Oxygen, Region, Life, and Descendants – the components of a healthy habitat. More than 254,000 participants have joined WeLoveU’s Clean WORLD activities in 58 countries around the world, with over 1,600 clean ups.

WeLoveU has received more than 100 honorary and presidential awards from various countries and governments, including the U.S. President’s Call to Service Award for volunteerism and the Green Apple Award for best environmental practice. The WeLoveU Foundation hopes to continue to serve the global village through compassionate deeds, sharing the love of a mother to the whole world.

  3. Who would have thought COVID-19 would have not only have an impact on health and socialism among people, but also indirectly on our environment, too? While reading this article, it made me think how it really is OUR responsibility to take care of this earth as a global village. We live here together, so, why not clean it up together? Everyone can do their part to help! I’m very happy to see WeLoveU taking such an active role in this! Great job everyone!
