Packs on Backs Supports 200 Students at Aberdeen Elementary

On Thursday, August 22, 2024, WeLoveU brought the Packs on Backs and Tools for Schools program to Aberdeen Elementary School. Located in Hampton, VA, 200 students received new backpacks and school supplies. Families can rest assure their children start the school year prepared and confident. This is the third year that volunteers in Virginia have organized this type of event.

Addressing a Significant Need

The average cost of school shopping has exceeded $890. Currently, more than 70% of students at Aberdeen Elementary qualify for free or reduced lunch. These two factors could place a financial strain on families in the communities. To reduce this strain, WeLoveU donates backpacks and school supplies every year.

Voices of Support

The day began with volunteers arriving at Aberdeen Elementary by 9:30 a.m. for setup. They decorated the space, displayed supplies, and provided snacks. The energy was palpable as students and their families arrived. Everyone greeted with warm smiles and the promise of a brighter school year ahead.

Guest speakers took the stage first. Speakers included Superintendent Dr. Raymond Haynes, Mayor Donnie Tuck, and Delegate A.C. Cordoza. Members of the Hampton School Board were also in attendance, showing their support for the initiative.

Dr. Haynes said, “Educational resources are fundamental to student success, and today’s event is a shining example of how community support can make a tangible difference.”

Hampton Mayor Donnie Tuck praised the collaborative efforts that made the event possible. “This event exemplifies the power of partnership in our community. When we come together, we can achieve great things, and today’s donation drive is proof of that.”

Delegate A.C. Cordoza highlighted the economic challenges faced by many families. “In times like these, events like Packs on Backs are not helpful; they are imperative. By providing these supplies, we are easing the burden on families and giving children the tools they need to succeed,” she shared.

The Impact of Giving

The impact of Packs on Backs extended beyond handing out supplies. Byron, a WeLoveU volunteer, spoke about the broader importance of supporting under-resourced communities. “It’s about more than supplies; it’s about giving these students a strong foundation for their school year,” he explained.

Principal Jasmin Royal shared her deep gratitude for the event, noting its impact on the students’ morale. “We are so honored to have the WeLoveU Foundation bring their Packs on Backs program here. For some of our students, this donation means starting the school year on equal footing, with pride and confidence.” She added that the event would leave a lasting impression on the whole school community.

Acknowledging the Supporters

Generous contributions from sponsors made the event possible. Local sponsors include Costco, Maola, Walmart, Wegmans, and Dragonfly Paint. Their support filled each backpack with quality supplies, benefiting students and their families.

As As Principal Royal put it, “You don’t know what your dedication to the community means for schools like mine and families like mine. We appreciate you making this a global initiative, impacting people all over the world.”

The WeLoveU Foundation remains committed to its mission of supporting communities in need. The future looks bright for Aberdeen Elementary and beyond thanks to the support of volunteers, donors, and local leaders.

  1. This is so amazing. It’s not the first time I’ve seen We Love U carry out activities like this in our area, and as a parent of four littles in the Hampton roads, I am just so grateful for them being as involved as they are.
